Your first column might be so insightful, so witty, so poignant that the editor is considering nominating you for the Pulitzer Prize. But this insightful person might very well think, "Hmm, but can they do it again?" Submitting four to six sample columns will convince this skeptics that you can do it again. And again. And again. At least six times. So, why not send the editor six samples, all attachments or pasted into a single submission? Because then you have just that one shot. Sending them one at a time means you have six chances of catching an editor at a time they are looking for your subject matter.
