Ribbons Can Help, But They Do Not Cure Cancer

One should not underestimate the power of ribbons but then again, one should not also overestimate it. It is a common gesture that every time people desire to raise awareness and promote a certain cause, they would always make use of ribbons to help them out. This is because ribbons have been playing a symbolic role of urging people to unite for a common goal. But unfortunately, that probably is the limit of its capabilities.

Cancer awareness, for example, is one of the most common awareness campaigns today. This campaign also makes use of ribbons. According to the experts, if women would get regular pap smears, then almost no woman would die from cervical cancer.
For breast cancer, early detection is the key to survival. Unfortunately, breast cancer also has a survival rate of zero. The pink ribbon has done an effective job to make women feel that everything is going to be alright. The pink ribbon has become a symbol of hope and a belief that breast cancer is only here to annoy you and that once you are free from it; you can live a happy and peaceful life. But the truth is far from that.

Ribbons have done exceptionally well in raising awareness and convincing people to get screened. It has also helped raise considerable amount of funds.

Unfortunately, the funds that have been raised went only to corporate pockets, including well-known breast cancer charities. The pink ribbon has ultimately misrepresented the truth of breast cancer and although it has helped the cause, it is most definitely not the cure.

What the pink ribbon should represent and promote is the funding of the medical researches for breast cancer. Cancer is known as the second biggest cause of death in the US, behind heart disease. The greatest cancer killer is Lung cancer. It is then followed by breast cancer and prostate cancer. But even with this knowledge, breast cancer research only gets 7 percent of the investments on breast cancer research.

Although there are many different colors for each type of cancer, millions of people still die from it. This just proves that ribbons can only help as far as it is able, but it is far from being the cure.
